Howdy Doody,

Our next trip is to the fabulous Parc Mine in Betws y Coed. Here you will find a wealth of mining history and geology. There are many remaining ore chutes left in situ and some fantastic geology if you know what you are looking at. Included in the trip is a wonderful vein of fool’s gold littered with fantastic sparking gleaming colours of dark golds, reds and yellows (no chipping out samples and taking them home please).

Location : Parc Mine
Meet Place : Gwydyr Forest (see Google map below)
Meet Date : Thursday 24th February 2022
Meet Time : 6:30pm-6:45pm
Requirements : Wellies, overalls, helmet, lamp, gloves.

Suitable for novices.

Link to Parking (turn left up to the parking) : https://www.google.com/maps/@53.1317658,-3.8109386,3a,75y,139.1h,73.25t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s3FYnGeK0nWl-9bGXdqMU8w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

Nearest Postcode : LL26 0PN (this is a nearby Chapel)

Directions : From Llanwrst, take the bridge over the river Conwy on the B5106. Follow the road until you hit a very sharp right hand bend with an odd staggered junction on it. You are trying to go straight across the “stagger” where you will see a Gwydyt Forest sign indicating parking to the left and right. Go RIGHT up the hill until you see the sign in the google link above â€" turn left there, park almost immediately.

Notes : There is some water at the entrance which may or may not breach wellie tops. Inside the mine there are holes on the right hand side (left on the return) that drop down a long way â€" stay away from these. There is a wooden shuttered tunnel that will require a short crawl (about 12 feet). There is wood in the mine â€" most of this is rotten, do not trust any of it.

If you do fancy coming, please could you let me know either by replying to this email or posting to the forum (link above) and also let me know if you need to borrow a helmet with a lamp.

Thanks !

See you soon…..

:)

Ian

There is a description of the mine on the CAL website:

Not sure how far you will get in an evening trip, but hopefully Richard will get to new shaft and the superb Victorian engineering :-)

Sadly I will be in S. Wales that day...
