I've had enough issues to give them a wide berth these days.
I did better running an old pc as a server from home - which i might be going back to soon (for some other applications) in which case I'll probably move the ucet site onto it.
I might be able to help with this.

I have a spare server kicking around doing nothing (A proper Server, not a random box cobbled together). Dual Opty 250's, 4x1GB ECC (4 spare), LSI 8 channel SATA card in a 4U rack with mostly quiet fans. If you don't mind having it at your place, UCET are welcome to have it to run the site from. I've not bothered with it since I stopped hosting stuff from home.

If its doing nothing else and you feel like donating it then perfect. i've got a 8foot high 19"rack and i'll free up 4U in it somewhere.

I've always hosted from home myself in the past but the running costs of a server (electricity) were comparable to paying for Host Papa. What concerns me the most is my Upload speed - being a fraction of my actually achievable 4gb download speed.....

That said i'd rather have a reliable server - if slightly sluggish, rather than suffer the crap we're getting at the moment. Which is rarely fast anyway and all too often grinds to a complete halt.

For the time being i'll have another damn good moan at host papa and see if they can move us to a less busy shared server.

I'd leave them tomorrow except that we've paid for 2 years in order to get a cheap as chips deal and want to get as much value out of the bastards as possible!

It's really doing nothing. I don't think I've fired it up for a month or two to be honest. My only gripe with it is that you have to boot it off IDE rather tan the SATA card. I'll include a 250GB IDE drive of long-forgotten origin (Read as "I found it lying round in my spares pile, and it appears to work OK, but have no idea where it came from").

We'll have to organise you picking it up from Wrexham at some point, as I'm certainly not dragging it out on a trip, it weighs a bit.

I think the only thing it needs (and I *may* have one spare), is an ATX PSU with an 8pin EPS on it. At the moment, it's using the 250W job out of my 2U, but I'll need that back at some point.

i'll have a psu somewhere i'm pretty sure. Plenty of IDE drives for booting from if you need to keep your 'spare'. In fact plenty of PC's and bits generally speaking - lots of 19" rack cases if you ever need any - all 4U.

I'm trying to reduce the amount of "junk" (the Missus's term!) , You can't go offering me more rackmount gear! Much as I would like to fill one of the "cubbyholes" here with a nice 48U rack stuffed full of 48 core beasts and Cisco switches, the other half has insisted that's not going to happen.

4x1GB of Registered ECC PC3200 is fairly cheap now, about a fiver a stick from fleabay if you fancy filling it up, (Though I can't see this Forum using 4GB, I suspect the processors would struggle before the RAM).

yer it'll run fine on a little over a gig to be honest. Nothing all the taxing and not a huge amount of traffic.

Our airing cupboard is know as the 'server room' - full height rack is pretty full. Everything from x10 home automation, pc's for serving cinema projector and various LCD tv's around the house via cat5 KVM extenders, CCTV, PC's for the recording studio - to reduce heat and fan noise etc in the studio itself - etc etc - you'd love it. Obviously its all 100% necessary but the wife doesn't see it like that - she just see's it as an expensive way of heating the house!

Indeed 100% necessary, :P  and I'll probably have similar one day, I'll have to have a gander at some point.

Is it just me or are other increasingly finding the ucet website unavailable at times?

Surly the club has enough funds to pay for a decent hosting service.

I use webhostinguk.com and I have had very few problems and very good support, they also keep regular  backups

One option is
1 GB disk space and 10 GB Monthly Bandwidth for £4 per month.

I am not sure how this fits the current UCET profile.

I know Tim is very busy at present, So I can help out if needed.

I am experiencing exactly the same John ...

Tim is busy with all sorts of stuff including babies but he and you are the only two people that understand any about the forum or webby stuff.

It would be awesome if you could fix it between you  ;)

I'm sure it is slow, and also it refuses to allow me to upload pictures.
When will we have PM back?
 •

Tim Watts

Sorry - I will pull my finger out asap. next 4 days i am totally totally busy but i WILL tidy things up again eventually. Need a full free day to get things properly sorted again.

Why wait for it to expiry, just move it now (or when you have some free time :)  when are next at your holiday home?   )
 •

Tim Watts

to be honest - between now and when i go back to the holiday home (just over a week from now i am mad busy) Being that i'll be out there for two weeks on 'hopefully' quiet night cover i think thats likely to be my best chance at getting some peace to get things done ;-) ;-)

Only that the bastards won't refund us. I guess we can afford to cut our losses. Its been 'ok' since my last major moaning sessions to them but i've noticed heavy server loading again the last few days myself....
