Gosh - this is an exciting topic to read!
Would it be worth doing the same thing with smoke when it is very cold outside at night and the air is warmer in the cave?

Andrew Farrow

just an idea for a future attempt - but as smoke bombs proved hazardous to tims health - how about a simple " tin can " alcohol burner - bioling away something distinctive - like peppermint oil - set up in the aven ?

very small / lightweight - and non toxic - but easily identified from the surface - the only prob - zero visual clues

assuming the alwyn valley isn't festooned with clumps of wild peppermint plants

Thats a good idea.
I have some peppermint oil - plus lots of other amazing smelling oils.
Also, why not set up a big fire down there to heat up the air and start a convection current?
But make sure that it is not SO BIG that you suffercate!

How does fresh air get into the space beyond the sump?  Will enough oxygen get back there before people venture past the sumps?

The problem with a big fire is that you end up filling all the fissures with smoke (aside from the health hazard!) and there are a lot of fissures!. I'm working on getting my hands on a Disto X and a few survey monkeys from this side of the pennines and begin a re-survey. Having got lost down a few fissures there could be a whole load of explorable passage no-one's crawled through (they definitely weren't on the survey).

Any chance you could let me know what the access is like during the winter (i.e. does it seasonally sump?)?

PS I'll do Nadolig first, Crazy & Doug

Ross, got a DiscoX and PDA here ross if you know what you're doing.

It needs calibrating prior to using coz i've just put new batteries in it.

I can't think who 'Derbyshire Ross' is.  May be a newbie.  Do you know that Tim has a DistoX and the other box to do survey work.  He also lives directly on top of OHA. He is hoping there will be smoke rising from the floor of his garage.

Ah thanks Mike!
Why do some people have to hide behind silly names?
At least everyone knows who we both are Mike!
