Probably because most people avoid a hole in the ground, whereas we see it as an opportunity.

Good vid Ian.
You want me to go down *there*? On a bloody *rope*?
Thanks for the explanation Tim.
You have also already answered a questionm i meant to ask ... did you go down one hole and back up another? i.e. did Dan and all of you pass easily through the vice on the way down or did you go down somewhere else?

It seems this deep narrow pot is not protected to prevent ramblers and other sheep falling own into its nightmare grip.
yer - we went exactly the same route in and then followed it out.

There is also an option for a single free handing 80m from top to bottom but wheres the fun it that? The route we took wandered from and back to the main 'pot' and was much more interesting :-)

nom its just a big hole in the ground and relies on the basic desire of creatures wanting to stay alive not to attemp to leap down it rather than needing to rely on fences etc - we don't aim to fence every single cliff face and falling is pretty similar above of below ground! - hmmm... a normal creatures desire to stay alive keeps it out.....which i suppose says a lot about the average cavers state of mind!!??!!!!!  :woohoo:  :woohoo:  :woohoo:

Are there many other gaping holes in the Yorkshire countryside like that? The impression I got from the video is that you could easily fall down that hole if your were just roaming about in the dark or in twilight.

if you cant see the hole and fall into it is that called natural selection ??

few yorkshire dales potholes are fenced - and in the case of jingling - it would require over 150m of fencing

and just on west kingsdale - there is rowten and bull pot that have significant open shafts

plus several more where a fall in the ent. series would result in serious injury

then there are hundreds of other grykes , shakeholes , boulders , rabit holes , drain ditches and stream run-offs that :

` an idiot wandering randomly at night ` could incapacitate themselfs by falling into them blind

to be blunt - there should not be people wandering randomly on the fell tops with no light .

you cannot protect every idiot from every hazard - and once you start trying - its a slipery slope - where do you stop ???

heck even gaping ghyll main shaft has minimal protection - its only partially fenced to stop people descending the flabks of the shakehole - wehere it " appears " safe - but one slip out be fatal

and bottom line - i know of no incidents of people ` roaming ` and falling into a dales pot - at least in recent years

Indeed there is that

I am pretty sure there is no legal requirement to make safe a natural feature.

(might be wrong    )

Depends what use the land has.. if it had a commercial use and owner they have a duty of care..
 •

Ian A

"Commercial use" - yes .... but not in every case (depends on the use)

I did say I might be wrong  :silly:  :silly:  :silly:

the weight should soon fall off me though,
If only it was that easy, we could all be as skinny as Mike Leany.

well after just going for my first jog, and weighing my self to see where i am now, i'm around 4 stone lighter than i was this time last year, and that is without doing any exercise other than work and underground trips.
