Any ideas on mine level on Bryn Alyn?

Hi all - I was mooching around the small caves on Bryn Alyn (near Nercwys/Maeshafn) when I stumbled across a mine entrance at the end of a quarried/natural rift. With a metal doorframe! Sadly it was 6 inches deep in water as it went off into the distance so I didn't venture in, especially as solo at the time.

Had a good look online, and its quite near to 3 other lead mines (Belgrave, Taylors, Penrehobin, according to Bing Maps)- but as it's easy and open access, 15 mins from the road and on the path that goes to the caves, I'd have thought there'd have been visits recorded!

So just wondered if anyone has any info?

Cheers

Dominic

Are you sure you have the “X” in exactly the right spot?

If it were a little further to the right (closer to the public footpath but on the same contour) it might be an entrance I have been in. If that is the case, the one I am thinking of, once had a water pipe leading from it to one of the houses (marked on the map). The house owner had dammed the mine inside and was piping the water to his house for some reason. At the time, the dam was 4=5 feet high and was holding back water making entry pretty much impossible (so I never had the opportunity to explore it).

Your picture doesn’t show a pipe so I am not sure if it is the same place with the pipe (and dam?) removed or whether it is a different entrance. I have been all over that hillside though and if it is a different one, I must have missed it.

Is that it?

You can see the pipe in the bottom right - was that still there?

Cheers for the reply - and yes, it looks like the same place as the doorframe and the metal rail are there, though I don't recall the water pipe, and there was no dam visible for the stretch I could see from the doorway, unless it's furthert along?

The X WAS a little vague, as I could have been more accurate on the satellite image where you can see the path but figured it was harder to see the general location (ie Bryn Alyn) on that image.

I guess it's most likely to be a Pentrehobin mine level looking at other maps available but that entrance is not marked on any old maps I could find.

But good to know at least someone else has seen it!

The dam is further in (but not that far in).

If it is no longer being used to harvest water AND the dam has gone, it may be explorable now

Lol it's always possible that i A) missed the dam and b) missed the pipe too! That said, I'll take a mosey back there at some point, with some wellies!! Will update on here when I do.....

Last time I was there, the dam and pipe was still there so didn't venture any further. This was an adit level for Taylor vein. Taylor vein was an unproductive mine worked from an adit level and 1 shaft

Update us if you do! It's nice to have a mystery....

If I go and don’t report you’ll be happy either way as it will remain a mystery lol

Me and Liz explored to the end of this earlier in the year. We went over the Dam into waist/chest  deep water..... It's, a Wade to the end.... About 300m further on. Eventually goes dead.

Still got the pipe in there, hopefully no reports of cloudy water at the house  :P
