As we prepared our descent into the yawning abyss of Moel Fferna mine, Tim Watts exclaimed...

"What are we doing going underground on a day like this?"

His remark made me think that if anyone in the club ever wants to do other non-cave and mine exploring activities then perhaps they would like to join us.  When Bella and I are not participating in UCET activities we generally try to get in to some other mischief - especially in August.  For example lake or sea swimming, diving, snorkelling, sailing, scrambling on the mountains of Snowdonia. Maybe you can suggest activities we could join up with?

has anyone got a boat? like one you could take in the sea with an engine and stuff, not one you need to pump up and row.

I have a Gull sailing dinghy, that has a gaff rig.  We have taken it to sea but prefer calm situiations after we got blown over in an unexpected twister off Trefor.

For a really BIG motor boat speak to Tim with Tanith at Lloc.  I think his is moored in Conwy but it must cost a fortune to fill the tanks up.

I dont really have anything in mind, i just fancy going for a days / hours / afternoons boating.

it would also be nice to get some pictures of the coast from the sea. Also I dont know if there are any maunsell forts off the coast of notth wales, would be awesome to see one though.

Also a nice small beach / harbour facing North and fantastic diving all round - but watch the current.

i just googled, looks pretty cool.

there are or were forts in the mersey estuary (another google search), i don't know if that trip is doable from north wales.

my knolage of boats is pretty limmited, infact here is everything i know-

Boats float, when they stop floating they sink, boats sink all the time, which is why big boats have little boats tied to them.

if your boat sinks and you dont have a little boat to get into, you will probably die.

and thats it, but i would still like to try some boating with someone who knows more about boats than me.

My sailing boat can't sink because it has boyancy built in.  Under the fordeck and under the seats are large pockets filled with air. Even if you fill the boat with water it still floats and sails - but rather slowly.

You might do well to learn sailing on a large lake like Padarn or Bala.

Motor boats use a huge amount of fuel.

I used to have a power boat that couldnt sink. It too had air pockets. I left it on windermere over night...... It sank, lol
