If a leaf could talk

If a leaf could talk to people, then here is what i'd say
please don't cut the trees down, you'l regret the deed one day

I take hydrogen from water, I pull carbon from the air
then I pull the CO2 apart, and have oxygen to spare

with the help of some electrons, and cascading proton holes
dislodged by passing photons, which my chlorophyl controls

I make carbohydrate chains with the atoms I obtain
which I store in roots and stems, where carbon can remain

and when I fall upon the ground, on a chilly autumn day
I will take some carbon with me, for the soil to store away

so please don't cut the trees down, if you want to breath the air
let those leaves make oxygen, you know it's only fair.
