UCET Ladies Trip Advisor - Wednesday 21st May 2025 - Parc Mine

UCET Trip Advisor

Hello All,

Our next trip is to the fabulous Parc Mine in Betws y Coed. Here you will find a wealth of mining history and geology. There are many remaining ore chutes left in situ and some fantastic geology if you know what you are looking at.
We are going to try to get down to the lower levels. Be prepared for ladder climbing. Please bring a harness with cowstails

Location : Parc Mine
Meet Place : Gwydyr Forest, Hafna Car Park (see Google map below)
Meet Time : 6:30pm
Requirements : Wellies, overalls, helmet, lamp, gloves. Change of clothes, harness & COWS tails, SRT kit for those trained.

Suitable for novices with some experience.

Link to Parking: https://maps.app.goo.gl/K8iSNNHkZg2Ly96s9

Nearest Postcode : LL27 0JB (this is an Unnamed road)

Directions : From Llanwrst, take the bridge over the river Conwy on the B5106. Follow the road until you hit a right hand bend with a left junction for Betws y Coed take this left but immediately take the right turning (there's a sign saying Gwydyr Forest). Follow this road up hill for 1.2 miles till you come to the car park on the Right hand side.

Notes : There is some water at the entrance which may or may not breach wellie tops. Inside the mine there are false floors and holes on the right hand side (left on the return) that drop down a very long way â€" stay away from these. There is a wooden shuttered tunnel that will require a short crawl (about 12 feet). There is wood in the mine â€" most of this is rotten, do not trust any of it. There could be some old ladders to climb and some stopes to clamber up/down.

If you do fancy coming, please could you let me know either by replying to this email or posting to the forum (link above) and also let me know if you need to borrow a helmet with a lamp.

Look forward to seeing you there  ;D

I've just noticed the "Contact the UCET team" link on the main menu, the info could maybe do with editing to point potential new members to the Blue Bell Inn, Rhosesmor Rd, Halkyn CH8 8DL, instead of the Glan as we seem to have adopted this as our preferred after trip venue?

Mark
Thanks,
I have updated the contact link and the home page

Website Issues / Some notes on the new forum
Last post by admin - May 05, 2025, 08:47 PM
The new forum seems to be working OK and so I thought I would just add a few explanatory notes so that people get the best out of it.

I have seen a couple of minor error messages where some attachments are missing - this is down to faults in the old kunena forum software which had a mismatch between attachments listed in the database and actual attachment files. I will try and fix these manually where needed.

There are a lot of configuration options users can set in their profile to tweak the way the software works, you can alter the default notifications, change your password, avatar etc. etc.

I have deliberately not enforced a draconian password regime - you are all adults and I am sure you understand that weak passwords are bad. The passwords on the system are stored as an irreversible hash so that even if someone managed to get the database they would have to try random passwords in order to try and match each hash. Hackers will do this and there are tools to help them, so don't use your favorite football team as a password! The hash scheme used in the new forum is a lot more secure than the old one and this is the reason you needed to change passwords via password recovery.

For good passwords a simple combination of two or three words separated by funny characters defeats a lot of hacking tools, so a password like Bugger-Bognor! is pretty secure (do not use this example!)

Members who have admin/moderation rights NEED to choose a secure password as you have a lot of power and want to keep the forum secure and running smoothly.

The SMF wiki has a lot of useful information for both users and administrators:

I hope the new forum will be reliable and am happy to answer any questions.

Dave

Quote from: admin on May 03, 2025, 10:02 PMOK, after a significant amount [13hours] of work I have installed the new forum software from scratch on the production UCET server. The database has been populated with all the data from the old forum just after this was shut down and so everything is up-to-date.

There is an issue with emails used to reset passwords, but I have a workaround and have a outstanding call to the HostPapa support team.

Any problems then get in touch with me.

Dave

Brilliant, loving the new site Dave  :)
Thanks so much for all your hard work.

Just a quick note, the UCET site will be down while I have another attempt to switch to SMF forum.
I intend to start around 9.30 and plan to get the site back by 19.30 at the latest - depending on how easy it is to download a backup files.

Hi, welcome to the forum. We try to have at least 1 trip a month where non club members can join us to try caving, keep an eye on the forum or Facebook page for these trips.
To join the club as a member you will need two current members to propose and second your membership application, so, if you know any current members this could speed up the chances of joining us on a trip sooner. If you would like any more information on joining the club as a member please email, membership@ucet.org.uk
hopefully see you on the darkside soon
