Title: Lost johns cave : 31st MARCH 2013 - Trip report
Post by: Andrew Farrow on Apr 01, 2013, 09:20 AM
The ` lost in johns saga `

Securing the permit was an epic in its own right â€" but after the diplomatic intervention of ian â€" we prevailed â€" and had authorisation for the last trip down LJC before the closed season began

Attending :

Andy-j “ lost “
Hywel “ turbocharged “
Boydy
Richard [ tims ]
Dylan

Not attending :

Mike : “ lycra “ leahy â€" climbing
Mick “ more money “ murf â€" working
Joel “ jibber “ â€" just didn’t turn up
Dan “ sicknote “ Sutton â€" recovering from injures received [ he says he “ fell over “ ]

so that was it  , 5 “ untied “ cavers on a SRT trip down 5 pitches â€" what could possibly go wrong ?????

Despite the clocks ` springing  forward ` - every one was at inglesport for 08:45 or earlier

Breakkie was ordered [ dylan consumed a inglesport “ wellie filler “ in about 5 seconds â€" does mrs Dylan feed him ??/ ]  â€" and shiney stuffs looked at

Once we had determine that no one else was coming , We zipped on up to leck â€" parked in the correct spot [ 3 cars only ] . kitted up â€" and went caving â€" the entrance is in a civilized location â€" 30m from the road which was nice â€" and with most water locked up as ice / snow â€" water levels were very low

Down to the first junction â€" turn right â€" and  a bit of a roof traverse â€" until you step over a hole into a dry fossil passage

Sounds so fooking easy â€" but its 4 years since I did this cave â€" and was following someone who knew the way

The problem is that you can traverse up above the streamway â€" at several different points â€" which all take you to different places

We eventally determined that we had inadvertently started to descend the monastry route

So back tracked â€" and scratched our heads â€" the description was consulted several times â€" to little avail

2 hours later : EEEK : [ including the time we pissed about rigging the 1st pitch down monastry ]  - [ and only because Dylan pushed every climbable route ]

We were finally across the traverse at the correct level , Thereafter we made good progress , with Riging done by â€" who-ever arrives at the pitchead first

Until we got to battleaxe â€" a rather strenuous [ IMHO  ] traverse â€" which I delegated to Dylan â€" cowardice I know â€" but he didn’t find it easy

But we all made it â€" and WHEEEEEEE !!!!!! down Valhalla â€" a 40m aven with bonkers views on the way down

As I was last down â€" I caught the team up at “ final pitch “ â€" which drops into a pool after a traverse out to avoid hazards and water

The pich was being de-rigged â€" WTF ?????

Boydy â€" had made a leadership descision â€" it was 16:00 â€" and we had a long way to ascend to the surface

So we turned back . Once again â€" I had been defeated by lost johns â€" I could peer down the ladder route to the pool that feeds the streamway down to grounsheet jn and the leck mastercave .

Only 7~8m away â€" so near â€" yet so far - Curses â€" but I couldn’t say anything â€" as I had been responsible for 20 minuites of easy caving taking 2 hours

But that said â€" we now know how to find the start of monastry route â€" for a future sporting trip

Thus â€" we set off to return to the surface â€" we had a ` de-rigging plan ` - which promptly fell apart â€" as hywel and Richard just disappeared

Dylan ` strong like ox ` - hauled the big bag â€" which was now full of wet rope

Leaving  boydy and I to bring up everything from battleaxe upwards

We re-emerged into glorious sunshine â€" to find hywell and Richard â€" changed into civvies and sat in the cars

A fun trip to a Yorkshire classic â€" Valhalla pitch is a fooking magnificent shaft

Massive props to everyone who attended â€" and a pox on those who didn’t

no pics - as no camera monkies turned up

flol..

Couple of points..

My name was never on the "i will be there list"
and
I dont think Ian supplied any diplomatic intervention, other than telling me i wasnt aloud to send emails with talk of burning peoples houses to the ground.

on a side note, i suspect i will be out of action for 6 weeks or so, just waiting for someone to come and take me to hospital, i'm fairly sure my arm is broken, you saw me fall, i did land with a thud.

It's a rotator cuff tear, caused by damage to the supraspinatus tendon, no f'ing clue what any of that means, but it hurts and the Doc says it'll take 8 weeks to heal.

It's easy to aggravate too. Seriously, rest it up, or it'll get worse (You can't move it at that point, without screaming like a bitch). Usually seen in cricket/baseball, a throwing injury... how the hell did You land to do that?

we've already established beyond any doubt (on facebook, so therefore it must be true) that Stacy did this, beating the crap out of you for taking Jay on the CRTT. ;-)

Seriously, i did the same thing a while back and it took several months to sort itself - and like Ali says, its really easy to aggravate and set back the healing. Which hand is it? Might not be so easy to rest if now stacys kicked you into the spare room! hahaha

i found the use of an elasticated tube-y -grip when working a big help, but don't use them to often as you don't want to rely on it

A rotator cuff tear is caused by the rough end of a rotating pineapple insertad up the rectum hence the rotator tear, thats why it hurts and takes 8 weeks to heal, pinapples are fuc.in spikey when they are spinning.
