Title: Caving lamp
Post by: Danny Sutton on Dec 27, 2012, 07:53 PM
Anyone flogging a caving lamp?

either a converted oldham, petzl duo or other proper caving lamp.

I'm after a proper lamp, not some dodgey ebay special from china.

i dont want to spend a fortune, it's for our jay, i'll go and buy a pixa if no one has anything

I intend on bringing some of the new CustomDuo (//www.customduo.co.uk) modules with me to the AGM. These will be for sale. If you can lay your hands on a Duo then you will be able to upgrade it...  ;)

Is Custom Duo anything to do with you les?

Not really. The two guys that run CustomDuo are my mates and one is in my other club (Wessex). I was bringing some units with me for Crazy, but talked the CustomDuo boys into letting me have some more on sale or return, possibly at special "mates rates". I hope to have a selection of the new units that they have just released, the previous versions have all sold out or I would have brought some with me at the Christmas party...

Provided they are in stock I can collect anything from them to bring with me, cash on delivery. As I said, I might be able to get a deal on "mates rates"  ;)

Have a look at what is on offer and you could get to look at the real McCoy before buying instead of pictures...

If you can get a Duo from fleabay then these modules will upgrade it to a really good light for a sensible budget...

am i right it's the same lads that were building the rude-nora? cos thats what i was after, i tried to buy one earlier this year with no success and they are still showing as not available on their website.

I'm not sure what their plans are for Rude Norah as they need to order a large batch of machined parts in order to gain a bulk order cost saving, to build the next batch. It requires a massive up front investment which I'm not sure they are prepared to take at the moment as they think the market is mostly satisfied so they're not sure if they will sell them all and cover the original investment.

The CustomDuo modules are excellent and result in an high grade light for a relatively small investment. There are thousands of Duo's out there so they are sure to sell as many of those modules as they can make...

I thought the Duo's took 4x 'AA' NiMH/Alkaline cells?
Title: Caving lamp
Post by: Tim Watts on Dec 28, 2012, 05:56 PM
yup.

4x 1.2volt or 1.5volt batteries - 6v is the upper limit.

this info might be useful:

 ------------

Battery Durations

Battery capacities and arrangements will vary considerably. CustomDUO Full-face Omni modules incorporate  power settings designed to best suit caving application, and importantly keep operation as simple and intuative as possible.

The regulated power settings for modules are given in mA. To determine the approximate regulated duration of light on your battery arrangement at a given power setting, simply divide the mAh capacity of your cell pack by the mA power draw at a given setting. For example, using 2100mAh NiMh low self discharge rechargeable AA cells at a power setting of 350mA will give a regulated duration in the region of 5-6 hours. CustomDUO recommends low self discharge NiMh rechargeable cells, such as 2000mAh Sanyo Eneloops (and we suspect that the new 2500mAh Eneloops are rather good). Higher capacity NiMh AA cells are invariably a false economy. If you do not achieve durations similar to the above figures it is likely that your batteries are no longer performing to their specified level.

I look forward to seeing your lights when you come Les.
I have just ordered a decent light from Roy Fellows.  I think it may be like Tims eyesocket burner. I don't think he is a man who likes being messed about.

I also have an old Oldham lamp, and may get Roy to fit his Eco system into it later.
Your friends lamp conversions also look interesting.  It is so difficult to compare without seeing the two together in the same black hole.

Roy's are better for the Big stuff, far brighter, depending on the model.

The others appear more oriented to Caving, and smaller stuff. No need to be as bright.

So have I done the right thing in ordering a Trigon from Roy?
His biggest model seemed a bit too bright for the likes of me.  When we get out of a mine I would find it difficult to see properly in normal daylight.

When the light comes I will decide what to do with our Oldham lamp.  Seems there are many alternatives.  I must say that Roy's trade in an Oldman offer seems very reasonable, and Ians reference is glowing.

For the money, I'd have one from Roy... but I make my own.

I think Dan's is a Trigon as well. Not too sure about Tim's, it may be.

i do have a trigon, for the money it's great, not a patch on Andy's scurion, but it's like a 3rd of the price.

to be honest, it's had an annoying fault for ages now where it will randomly show the low battery warning, so you dont know if the battery is going flat or not, plus it's heavy, very heavy.

Dan - I've heard good things about the Oldham conversions from Bif. You know about Roy's stuff.  Takes your choice.

As for the LED Showdown, I'll break out the SST-50 if You're not careful (and I can find the damn thing), and (Hopefully), I have a Bridgelux on the way to "evaluate. Neither are really practical though... :-(
