As per the topic really...
Selfishly these are the only weekends i'm not working in December and I really wanna come! ;-)
Should we think about booking the Brit again?
Sat 1st or Sat 8th pretty please :-) :-)
is it this time again all ready? oh dear
Either for me Tim
is there anywhere to stay near the brit, i fancy comming but would like to have a drink and obviously couldnt get home if i did..
i usually stay at the travel lodge in Halykn. Is usually just under £30 for a family room.
http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/133/Halkyn-hotel/rooms-rates?from=list (http://www.travelodge.co.uk/hotels/133/Halkyn-hotel/rooms-rates?from=list)
Give it a few weeks and there are usually some offers to share rooms ect
Has to be the 1st of December for me and Bella.
Last year we camped in the van in the layby on the lane that leads over the bridge, but were woken up by the lorries filling with salt at the Council Depot over the road as it got icy.
Is there any venue other than the Brit? I know I am one of many people who felt the food last year was not at all commendable.
Are the Glan doing food yet? I seem to remember that there is also accomodtaion above the pub there.
Most of the food was used as missiles across the dining area at the last party. I'd expect that to happen anywhere though. I'm sure Mike started it too
Yes, Mike did. But others abetted. Mike has no taste for decent food though, so it is not surprising he reverts to throwing it about.
More seriously, I was wondering whether you Joel, and Vikki Sestan could do something clever - either at the Glan, or at the hall behind the White Horse, Cilcain. I don't mind paying £20 to £25 for a good Christmas dinner (excluding drinks). It seems silly to cut corners on our Christmas meal for a tight price. I also don't mind helping with preparing veg etc given guidance.
Ok, i have catered before for large christmas parties and was spearheading a Sunday cavery for years, but your idea has one flaw John. I'm expecting to be blind drunk! :)
I'm leaving it up to other members who live locally to come up with some good suggestions of venues. As long as the food is reasonable, not too expensive, and they can throw a good party afterwards, i am happy.
I'm sure you could do us all an excellent meal - if only you could keep the getting blind drunk bit until after it is all served and being eaten. If we roasted a leg of lamb, a turkey and a chunk of beef, served with a selection of vegetables, plenty of good gravy, and normal spread of sauces. May be choice of Christmas pudding and something else.
WOOOOOOAAAAAAHHHH !!!!!!!
We have provisionally asked Vikki to organise this years party and she is currently away on holiday. At this moment we have not agreed anything with her and she has not formally committed to doing it ....
When she comes back off holiday I will ask her formally and if she accepts everyone can then dive in with ideas/suggestions etc.
;)
Ian
Thats really good news Ian.
Is it a case of great minds think alike?
Possibly :P

She has no choice now. It's in writing
Right then you hotch potch of dolly mixtures
You all LOVE the Mendips!!!! So.......
I propose we have the Christmas rave up down here! You have fab accommodation at the Wessex..... A pub you can get plastered in - actually 3, yes, 3 pubs to get plastered in and ALL do really good food!!!
You can bring your wives, mistresses, husbands, partners, animals  etc... and have a damm good knees up down this way.
Then...... its caving time!
AND.... I bet Les would agree. Sooooo .... why not bite the bullet and come down this way for a change! Or are you all too scared we will eat you alive or drink the lot of you under the table!!!!
I've seen small insects that could drink me under the table... :P
And my opinion on being eaten alive depends entirely who is doing the eating, and what it actually consists of... ;) different websites have varied opinions on this (Purely educational websites, of course.... *ahem* ).
That IS a very good idea Claire. AND a very kind invitation.

I had no idea, last I heard, pepe was behind the bar there.
Must have missed that one.

i have had a conversation with vikki before she ran off with a load of BIG greek blokes(sorry deano did'nt know how to break it to you)and it's vikki'gig to sort out the chrimbo do
Been from Salford, i'm not too bothered about the quality of the food, the beer and somewhere to sleep are right at the top of my list, a McDonalds near by for breakfast would also be a bonus.
So no takers for a mendip christmas do then......
Claire,
Vikki is organising the Christmas bash and she is on Hols in Greece at the moment - I have no doubt she will take on board everyones suggestions ...
... You might get a tap on the shoulder yet ...
;)
Ian
I don't care who sorts it or what it is - i just want it on the 8th, coz i'm offore for all the rest of december! selfish! selfish! selfish!
And if we're quick (coz we're getting booked up fast) we could play the gig.
Crown or Cilcain village hall ain't half a bad idea - halls big enough to extend the invite for the 'after-party' a bit wider afield... just an idea, we'll wait for sticky to recover from her Greek adventure and see what she says. :-)
So no takers for a mendip christmas do then......
Was hard enough to get people to commit to the Mendip trip last time, its ended up being 4 of us plus Les! I imagine the turn-out for a Christmas dinner down there wouln't be much better. I'd go for it though ;) :P
Bella and I very much want to come to Mendip, but we could not do this in August when we had so many guests. I certainly hope we will be able to come on the next mendip trip, but please do it in school holliday time.
The mendip trip was impossable to plan for, the date must of changed 20 times. when stuff is been planned, it just wants posting up with a date, then leave it as it is.
It changed once. Because the trip leaders couldn't make it and the Hut wasn't available.
Anyways...... Back to roast bird, heated balls, long fat chunky dead mans fingers sizzleing away, juices ripening and thickening up, 3 of your 5 a day coming along in the pot, copious amounts of good red wine on stand by, a drop of an aperative to get the juices flowing, pudd at the ready with good old high cholesterol sweetened on the side, and variety of either solidified or creamy cows pus for afters washed down with a rather large glass of Taylors vintage, and of course not forgetting a wee dram followed by a tipple of brandy to settle that poor stomach!
Try not to think about whether you need elasticated trousers due to an increased BMI, or the cholesterol about to fur your tubes up and give you a rise, but dont cut yourself coz it will take longer to heal due to sticky sugary red stuff trying to get to all areas of you!
Not long till christmas now
...that read like a script from a porn film, a medical drama and Nigellas Christmas special all rolled into one! The mind boggles ;-)
Claire is right.... we all do eat too much at Christmas.
Trouble is that I eat too much all the time.
Hi peeps, well I'm back from Greece and it would seem I'm sorting out the Xmas bash this year :-/
From speaking to members it would seem a local bash would be preferred as the majority wouldn't be able to make the mendips (sorry labrat - although I do think another mendips trip is due).
For now it would seem that the dates proposed so far are either the 1st or 8th of December.... can I have everyone's thoughts on what suits the majority.........
No... make a decision !
Just go for it! If you want a band let me know asap. If I do, venue needs to suit six piece. If you do it would need to be 1st or 8th.
The first of December suits Bella and me.
We also volunteer for any help with preparations, laying tables, cutting veg etc.
I'm sure Bella could scrub up and become an excellent waitress.
Hi All,
After speaking to some of you at the summer ucet party we've decided on a date for the Xmas party!
Sooooo....this years Xmas party will be on Saturday 1st December!
So far there have been a few suggestions about where to have the party...so can I have some input on the following please or some more suggestions.....
Suggestion One: Springfield Hotel - £23.95 - 3 course meal and 80's disco
Suggestion Two: Britannia Inn/Crooked Horn Inn/Similar - Price TBC - sit down meal/buffet with disco
Please give me some feedback and suggestions on what you all want, eg: budget? fancy dress? sit down meal/buffet?
Speak now or forever hold your peace :-p
I'm easy, the ONLY thing i ask is that there is affordable accomadation nearby. i dont mind traveloge type prices, but i aint paying £70 to stay in a B+B.
Other than that, i'm not too arsed where it is as long as theres somewhere to buy a pint from.
But on a side note, which ever pub puts up with everyone every thursday all year, turning up in caving gear and chatting shit too loudly, well IMO they should get the christmas party, after all, i think it's only fair they get peoples money rarther than spending it somewhere else.
JMO like, have it where ever people want, i just think you should look after the people who put upwith us.
i'll be the first to dive in
the springfield gets my vote
unlesssomeone else can tempt me
:S :S :S :S :S :S :S :S .
vote away folks
On Mad-Dan's criteria it should be the Glan. My original suggestion was that with Joel's skills as a chef and Vikki's experience in catering supllies we could do it DIY at the Glan or the hall behind the White Horse in Cilcain.
I really did not think much of the food at the Brit last year.
Has anyone any experience of the food at Springfield. We used to collect the oil there years ago and it was crap.

There's a travelodge that's a few mins away on the A55, Halkyn, last year was about £30

To be fair, I agree with Dan. :woohoo:
a few mins away from where?
i know where the traveloge is, are all the places listed close by?
This is SO FRUSTRATING>>>>
I have written three postings on this topic in the last 20 minutes that have crashed when I submit.
a few mins away from where?

Yes, within 5 mins by car/taxi at most
might be able to do a deal with the springfield
I will try again....
I don't agree with the idea that we should support the place that 'puts up with us'.
That is not an accurate assessment of the state of the market at the moment. ANY pub would put up with us gladly. They are all desperate for trade. People are just not going to pubs theses days. When i go round collecting oil I see just how most places are struggling. Many cut on quality to survive. In my view we should not be sponsoring this degradation of food quality.
My hope is that Vikki will ensure that we get a better quality meal than the one we were served last year at the Brit. I am sure Vikki knows what good quality means.
I may not have the same taste in beer as other UCET members, but I have praised before the range of real ales servied at the White Horse in Cilcain. I have not tried their food yet.
I intend a car to be totally out of the question
as i say, i'm easy, you've got to organise it vikki and i've not been a member of the club for that long, so my views dont count for that much.
but as i say, i feel it only right we support the people and places that accomadate us the other 51 weeks in the year, but as i've never eaten in any of the places listed, i cant really comment (not that i'm that interested in the food anyway.

Wales must be a bit different to manchester, my missis works in a pub, in a month she makes more in tips than i earn, and if people supported their local, they wouldn't have to cut on quality to survive, as they would be busy.
this is going a bit off topic now, and as i've said, i'm easy and have no preference, opinions were asked for and that was mine.
Im up for the springfield
Not up for a DIY bodge job at a disused pub/outbuilding/community hall or any other small dump (including the white horse in cilcain)
I'd rather pay for a decent night where I have to worry about nothing, food cooked and served bar manned and stocked up and a bloody good dance floor to throw some shapes !!
Its christmas !!! Only once a year :)
this is going a bit off topic
you where asked for suggestions not opinions.
poor vikki was bullied into this so please be constructive
and STOP TALKING SHIT
everyone has an equall vote in this place (unless i say different   )
Calm down dear
Calm down dear
just trying to look after YOUR woman mr plod(thats another name?)
Oh she knows my views on it :p i feel sorry for her with the pressure of it all people arent making it easy
Any like i said springfield gets my vote
Should put a thread up on the poll thingy to get a vote going
Springfield looks good to me, accommodation is a bit pricy but we could ask for a deal and the travel lodge is close too.
As for the quality of food, it is usual crap for mass catered Christmas meal no matter how much you pay - it what we expect
Does the Springfield have any decent ales, or is it just fizzy larger and Guinness
where is the Springfield? as in what town/village
Just on the outskirts of holywell i believe dan
it's in field near Halkyn website (http://hotel-northwales.com/)
actually on the A55?
just googling, if i've got the right place, the rooms are cheep, £32 for a twin or double room on the first of december
where is the Springfield? as in what town/village
just tell them you are under 5 and it's freeeeeee

Are you looking at the same place as me, Springfield is quoting £78 but just £24 at the travel lodge.
probably not, i'm looking at this place - http://www.superbreak.com/go/IN635/hotels/springfield_health_club-hotel-7218.htm
but i've just realised the price i'm looking at is probably per-person
Springfield !
Wherever we end up. Do you want our band? £250 (thats £50 each for them and nothing for me!) and we'll all turn up in Fancy Dress or do you want a disco. I'm easy either way but just need to know asap ccoz it effects other bookings.
1st is still ok for us - 8th is no longer ok (which is fortuitous).
Springfield sounds good enough to me. Ok, the foods not A1, the staff are pretty average but the Venue means little, people attending make or break it! And its got accom. available. I got a room there recently via late rooms - was cheaper to go through them than go through the hotel direct.
Wherever we end up. Do you want our band? £250 (thats £50 each for them and nothing for me!) and we'll all turn up in Fancy Dress or do you want a disco. I'm easy either way but just need to know asap ccoz it effects other bookings.
i think it's one of those dinner\disco nights so its all in the price and you are probably in the same room as marty's do with about another 100 peeps or so .
ahh right - gotcha. Well, the manager has our card so you never know!

That's coz i can't type or add up. 350 i meant. had to get £100odd quid insurance out of yours. and I'd be assuming the band might of blagged a dinner out of the ucet one. ;-) looks like its sorted anyway.
Normal wedding rate 600quid, you had mates rate plus i didn't take a cut at all. :-P
Vikki,
Can you let me know the details of what you have sorted ASAP so that I may circulate the details to all the members please ?
;)
Ian
1st is good for me :)
Has to be the eighth as kelly and the nurses are at the spring fields on the first on there Xmas doo
But would be great a double party on 1st I have been told its an eighties night!!!!!!
I have posted before, but I will say it again...
It has to be the first December for Bella and me.
I also relish the idea of a double night with nurses, and support the proposal for Tim and his band to play some fine music.
do we have a definite date for this yet?
December is the busiest time of the year in work for both me and my missis, add to this that my missis works nights, for us to be able to come we NEED to be able to make sure we can get the following day off work.
Yes we do, it will definitely be the 1st as the frenchies (as Ian puts it) have now booked their flights based on this.
I will have final details of venue by tomorrow - sorry for the delay peeps
Is it going to be fancy dress :silly: :silly: :silly:
im going naked either way
i wasnt too worried about the venu and stuff vikki, just the date :-)
Thank-you.
im going naked either way
Don't tempt me to wear my mankini.

I'm sure you don't need any tempting
Thanks to you all for your input.
Due to a disappointing menu at the Springfield I have opted for the Brit (tho I will have input on the food - thankfully)
Ive started a new thread so pledge your interest on there please :-)
