If Richards weather forcast is correct (his last one was!), then I may go sailing on Saturday and then join you on Sunday. I can't be 100% certain yet though. I was asking Richard if there is a chance we can drive the 'oversized Military' thing closer to the mine entrance through the forestry comm land to the West. It would take the sweat out of the steep ascent.
Put me down Ian :)
Done ;)

John you can drive quite close if you go on the forestry road but I don't know if there is permission to do so.

John, I will have a look tomorrow to see if it is possible to get "the monster" somewhere near the mine. I will put a message for you on the website, whatever I find.
I'll come along on this, being as it's just down the road from me!!

allready got plans. shame.
Please add me too. Thanks. :cheer:
is the noobie the young lady from wrexham
Muke, you still ok for sunday morning about 9am?
If Ali, Richard and Deano are all comming too then I am more likely to make the effort. A 10.30 meeting time is a bit early for me to get there from Bangor.
Thanks Dylan. It would be great if we can drive up to the top FC road. Looking on Google maps street view it seems there is no gate where the track meets the A5, but the track into the forest may be gated further up. The track itself looks well made up all the way to the loop at the end level with the spoil tips.

It is gated but it is open and there are a couple of the ways if it were to be locked. A standard car would be able to drive most of the way so your 4x4 would get there easily.
Dylan - Can you explain the 'other ways' to get to the upper track - if the FC gate is locked? Or send a map edited somehow.

When I get a chance tomorrow I will try and do one for you John
Thanks again Dylan. It would be great if you can join us on Sunday.
You can get very close to the mine via forestry track.
Marty convinced me to take my old Audi up that way a few years back. The sump was scratched all over. Never again :p

I'm the newbie - looking forward to my first trip with you guys. Be gentle!
Be gentle with a rugby player ?
Girl rugby!!!
Here is a map of the esiest way to get close to the mine by driving:
Here is an alternative:
guys, make sure you go in a 4x4 if you chose to take the track. It will take longer to drive up to the mine that way, than it would if you just walked directly up to the mine.
The road is awful
Thanks Dylan. Your maps are brilliant!
I have managed to copy and print filling an A4 sheet so we should not get lost. I will probably try both ways.
Joel - you should know better than to take suggestions from Marty. Always remember it is your car and you are the driver. If you mishape the sump pan then you will get oil leaks that are very difficult to repair.
It will be interesting to try the 101 off road for a bit! Seems like we will have a hearty group tomorrow!
lets just hope you don't tip the 101 on the bone shaker road, your 4x4 looks a little top heavy especially with it having such a hight road clearance :woohoo: :woohoo: . don't forget to get ian to video the drive up there, it will add to the atmosphere, especially with the GIRLY screams you will get off ian
Girl rugby!!!
Girl Rugby is still Rugby ;)
... especially with the GIRLY screams you will get off ian
O.M.G. .... :S
As a Public Service Announcement:-
If you have Oval Balls, please proceed directly to your GP. Do not Google, do not show them off in wonder, but seek medical help immediately.

But the whole point of my sport is that you have to touch the person with the oval ball..
Is that Medical advice, and is it infectious to do so? :silly: :P
Is that Medical advice, and is it infectious to do so? :silly: :P
Not infectious enough, you're supposed to shout loudly to alert others though. I guess this is where the googling comes in ;-)
Should anyone ever manage to *touch* me with their oval ball(s), then I imagine much screaming may be involved shortly afterwards...

We had another good trip in Penarth.
Thankyou Dylan for the excellent maps, which I used to find my way to the loop level with the mine workings . All the gates were open, and seemed uncloseable. The 101 drove along the tracks easily, the only problem being lots of hungry game birds. I returned to the gathering at the lay-by just before 10.30.
We all jumped aboard the truck and set of confidently - until we saw a man walking up the track and he did not step aside to let us pass. It turns out he is the 'game keeper' and he insisted that we had no right of way along these tracks and the land is not part of the forestry commission. With the debate going on about mine access on forestry commission land I did not wish to create any altercation. So we were forced to turn back as take the footpath.
It would be good to findout who is the landowner, and seek permission to use the track in the interests of saftey and rescue.
Great to meet 'Welsh lass', who does not look at all 'Welsh'. A very interesting person indeed. I certainly hope she will join us on more trips. Can anyone help her with a lift to our Thursday trips from Wrexham?
Glad to hear you had a good time. Shame about the angry game keeper though. I'm on my way back from the mines at Nenthead at the moment and it seems that there is is same problem there, most of the land has game on it and the gamekeepers hate anyone going off the track at all to access the shafts.
Probably a good call to turn around.
What does a welsh person look like? Obviously nothing like mike :p. Marty is welsh isn't he?
Great to meet you all. Many thanks for including me and looking after me.
Hope to see you again soon!
