Does someone (preferably someone patient) want to be very brave and very wonderful and teach me how to SRT? Or give me information as to how I go about getting SRT training? Who I contact? Etc.
Pretty please?
:side:
You need to check in with Budgie - he's the clubs SRT trainer and really knows his stuff. Drop him and email or whatever - if you're struggling for his contact details then let me know and i'll pass them on to you.
I'm also keen to learn SRT,and haven't met Budgie yet. With several new members at the moment is group training possible?
Also, would I need my own kit before training?Inglesport and Starlessriver sell SRT kits for around £200,would one of these be suitable for a beginner or is there a better option?
I'd suggest that a group session would be perfect - hang off buying your own kit until you've had a play with the club gear and decided a) that you like it and b) what kit you prefer using. i.e. ID or a Stop etc.
Thanks Tim.
If something can be arranged it will have to be at the weekends for me because of the distance I have to travel!
I'm keen to give it go if Budgie is willing to give us all some sessions :)
I WILL call him this week at some point and either ask him to come on here and arrange something, or liaise between him and the forum
I image that three of you would be about perfect for Budgie. But he'd be better able to confirm this.
I would also like to come on an 'SRT taster', and this may also help to bring Vikki from Bangor.
I have not actually seen it in action yet (other than Joel's heroic rescue of my cat!), and I would like to get a feel of what is involved.
Sadly Bella is adamant that she just wants to do crawly and walking stuff for now as she must have had a bad experience with abseiling at some time in her past.
I'd be interested in a bit of SRT training if there is any going on at a weekend?
SRT training dates confirmed. Please see this thread for more information: http://www.ucet.org.uk/index.php/forum/13-trips-a-events/4926-srt-training-programe-4th-march#4926 (http://www.ucet.org.uk/index.php/forum/13-trips-a-events/4926-srt-training-programe-4th-march#4926)
I know two other club members who would be able to offer training (three if one comes out of his hiding hole on the Wirral) ... nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more
Thanks for all your arranging, but unfortunately I can't get up to anywhere every Sunday for five weeks. A day or weekend would be do-able, but I understand that this might not suit anyone else. Not to worry, plenty to see without needing ropes!
Thanks again.
little jow: I wouldn't give up so easy - it can be sorted around you to an extent and largely depends on an idividual as to how quickly you pick up the techniques. Make whichever sessions you can and go from there. although formal in terms of making sure everyone knows all they need to know its amazingly flexible in terms of how it can be conducted. The underworld gets so much more exciting once rope access is brought into play!

Budgie has already asked me to cover one of the training sessions. Tim Davies has just done his level 1 IRATA so i know that he would be happy to help too.
By all means, if any member wants to help out or have a go at training, get on the phone to Budgie.
Joe. Leave it with me and will do my best to sort something else out. There are other members that are quite capable of teaching SRT that may be able to help.

that includes hoss , you know your brother.
Joel - Should be out Thursday so will bring the srt kit.
'little jow: I wouldn't give up so easy'
It's not giving up, it is more that I don't want to put anyone out any more since someone has organised something that I can't commit to.
'Joe. Leave it with me and will do my best to sort something else out. There are other members that are quite capable of teaching SRT that may be able to help.'
Cheers Joel. Just wondering (and I don't know how beginners begin usually!), does the club run SRT taster sessions? there may be members of the club that are not sure if they want to commit to a bunch of training, but want to give it a go in a safe, dry, well lit environment.
By the way, it is great to be in such a constructive club/forum.
its not unheard of we done various things in the past - but in reality, the first time you go and do the training it is - in effect a taster - if you don't like it (I'm sure you will though) then theres no commitment to carry on. :woohoo:
Like Tim has said, Many members go to the SRT training sessions as a taster anyway and see what develops after that. :)
that said - i'm going for a little play in the spar mine with some ropes tonight so if anyone want a bit of a taster...... see post in public trips and events

next time you are over this way give me a nudge and i'll dangle on a rope. hoss has a big tree in his garden does'nt he
Thank im for the open invitation to dangle in Hendre.
I can't come this evening because I am otherwise tied up.
Cheers Mike!
I know hoss has done SRT off his tree in the past, but i've had trouble trusting him since he told me to stand next to a muddy puddle so him and his mate could ride through on their bikes and splash me. Big brothers can be arseholes!
Love ya though hoss!

but that was 20 years ago.
i'll run through it with you if you don't trust big bro.(don't blame you really)
I don't mean it really. I trust my bro completely and look forward to dangling off his tree soon.
Hi all
I will take all you SRT newbys out in the cave enviroment once you have had the initial practice with budgie, but be warned i pull no punches if i don,t think you will make the grade i will say so you must be confident in your equipment and in your self. SRT is induvidual when out on a rope you are on your own. its not like your walking caving trips were you help each other to push and pull, you need to know at the out set if you get this wrong you will be putting yourself and you fellow cavers at risk. take note SRT Teams do not carry extra ropes to get you rescued if you hang up, so i hope you will understand if i say sorry you will not make the grade, I will
now rig up the spar mine again ready to take you all the ratio is 3 to 1 any more on the day i will ask another SRT caver who will be a competent person.

easy tiger
no bullshit, say it as it is
Mick is right, but I have every faith that budgie ensures everyone makes the grade :)
rigged a rope in the spar mine tonight - i may as well have left it in - in my opinion some of the bolts look a bit shit to say the least - if we're going to re-rig in there for any formal practice sessions are we gonna take a drill with us whilst we're at it?
