Saturday 10th March â€" Finding Croesor
I am organising a trip to locate Croesor through the Rhosydd No. 9 Adit (the rear way in) to explore the workings of Croesor that we always miss when we do the CRTT the other way around. There will be excellent photo opportunities as there is some winding gear still in situ at the top of an underground incline and many passages and chambers to explore.
I have previously tried to find this route and failed but as it is a common route out of the CRTT, it should not be hard to find especially if there is someone coming on the trip who actually knows where it is. (that's a "not so" subtle hint)
You will need wellies (might get your feet wet) but you will not need any SRT kit. You will also need food/drink and expect a long walk up a hill to get to the entrance.
Meet time will be 10:00am at the cafe @ Cwmorthin with a view to setting off from the parking area by the gate at the top @ 10:15am (if you want a breakfast you need to be there sooner to be ready to leave at 10:00am from the cafe).
Edited by Tim Watts 15:05 08/03/12:
Here is a Google Maps Link to the Cafe:
http://maps.google.co.uk/?hl=en&ll=52.98547,-3.965512&spn=0.002787,0.006968&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=52.98546,-3.96519&panoid=6QiR3XZe0P9wOd38WPrXSg&cbp=12,343.71,,0,6.65
Estimated 30mins walking time to reach the Adit and then 3-4 hours exploration, maybe longer.
Ian
Quick Note :
If the weather is too bad to make the walk to the entrance, an alternative trip to Cwmorthin "Old Vein" will be put on (Which I expect very few members here have explored)
Same meet place, time etc.
;)
Ian
I'd like to come on this trip please. :)
Book me in provisionally
Please!!
I have come out of the number 9 adit a few times, and the connection is very easy to make. I'm up for coming on this trip as I thought the route to the winding gear was SRT only. Most interested in locating the easy route to the gear :).
I think that the winding gear that you have found is in Rhosydd Ian. Croesor mine ends right after the final boat crossing. The wall in the passage after that marks the change over from Croesor to Rhosydd.
I can post maps of both mines later on for you to look at
(https://test.anduin.org.uk/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi575.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fss194%2FSuboffender%2Ftest-3.jpg&hash=176b90e57dfeda8fd1fd852d7e871e3319c42b17)
This is Croesor, showing the mine ending on the right side of the map, directly after the completion of the final boat crossing.
You need to right click on it and select 'View image' otherwise it won't display correctly
Is this the winding gear your on about:
is so Joel is right its in Rhosydd.
That's the one. Cracking picture of it too. I hadn't realised anyone else had been there since tony and llion rediscovered it last year. Nice one Dylan :)
Yes it is .... I didn't realise that was still Rhosydd
That whole part of the mine remains unexplored by everyone who has done the CRTT with the club ;)

the large incline with the revolvingplatform for the tubs ( the one that you walk over) it's up there
This sounds good to me.
I'll definately be there!
bollox - i'll be back offshore by then - gutted :-((((
Thanks for fixing this trip on a Bella weekend. We will both come along.
What does CRTT involve? Is this a lesser level of SRT?
Sorry John, I didn't think about the acronym. CRTT means "Croesor Rhosydd Through Trip" - It is the usual route taken by explorers undertaking the diverse and many challenges through the system :)
Ian
The croesor to rhosydd through trip (CRTT) is an competant SRT trip, as it reuqires, abseiling, zip lines, traverses and prussking.
Ians proposed trip is just a mooch around rhosydd, which suits me fine :)
which suits me fine...
And me - and Bella.
And by the way, your maps are fantastic!
Expect loads of questions when we next meet.
I'm not sure who drew the map of croesor, but I can find out. The map of rhosydd came from the main book on rhosydd. The name of the authors fail me.
Bangor university has a huge selction of mining books, the topics covering wales in its entirity
whilst you lot are on the CHICKEN RUN does anyony fancy doing the through trip and meeting up with you .
just a thought
I am working on a pass out for this one - might do the through trip !!!
On some of the other forums i think people have been saying all the ropes are pretty shite in there now so may need to do some rigging!!!!
Hey Mike
I fancy the through trip. Been waiting ages to do this.
woo - i'd be up for another trip through
Hey Mike
I fancy the through trip. Been waiting ages to do this.
looks like its on then. if you are doing the through trip you need a pulley for a STEEL rope. but im sure we've got enough to go round ?????
Don't tempt me :p
The first ab on the crtt requires a knot pass (due to the rope being rubbed through)
If you take enough rope you could always do the shaft as well
Is that the water forced air ventilation shaft?
Is that the water forced air ventilation shaft?
No thats one of the Rhosydd shafts. This one is the biggest one in Croesor and you come out right by the first ab of the crtt.
Can't say that I have done it, Sounds ace :)
Woo - sounds fun - lets do that shaft too then.
pully - i've got mine (i'll try not to leave it in there this time!)
I'll start a new thread
the shaft dylan is on about is the old chimney, i think .
its a long walk up to it if it is.
tim you ok to drive the landy to the entrance , unlike ian in his range rover ( laughed my efinn tits off)
I hope there will be enough sheep for us to do the easy route before the wolf team catch up with us. Do walky talky things work underground? Is there any way to communicate between groups underground?
the shaft dylan is on about is the old chimney, i think .
its a ling walk ut to it if it is.

Thats the one mike. I've not done it yet but would love to do it.
Would it be a biggie to move the trip to the 25th March??? To have a SRT and non-SRT trip on the same day. That way i could
1) Make the date
2) Make the date and offer the team bus (which can drive everyone up the track to the entrance).
Come on - everyone rearrange your lives just to suit ME, you know it makes sense! ;-) :P :P :P :P :woohoo:
Can't move the date Tim - sorry
There are two options though;
1) Split the group into two seperate trips; one being the non-SRT wander around the back end of Rhosydd / Croesor and the other to do the SRT.
or
2) Put the SRT trip on another date.
I am sure either of those is fine ;)
Ian

thats what ive been trying to say , don't you donuts listen . its quite easy to do two trips and meet up under ground for afternoon teas and cream scones
i knew what you were saying boss!!!!
i knew what you were saying boss!!!!
thank you darlin i thought i was going mad for a minute
damnit - can't we do the srt trip on the 25th so i can cum?
The non-SRT trip will be walking from Cwmorthin - completely the opposite end of the mountains to the usual CRTT trip. If done on the same day, the SRT'ers will have to have a completely seperate trip frm a different location.

Why?
I always walk up from Cwm as it avoids the walk back over the mountain after the trip and also means I can change at adit 9 and hide my clothes there so that they are right where I want them when I come out. And it avoids a two car shuffle (which is a major pane in the ass)

I'm getting there......... I'm a bit slow - i'm a cheshire lad you know.....

Les,
We drive right up to the Croesor entrance avoiding any walking at all for the CRTT trip (except back over to the entrance on the outside but that is much shorter than the Cwm walk).
Your way works perfectly for the non SRT trip and also if you cannot get your car to the entrance the other way (you need a landrover which I think you have !)
;)
Ian
After consideration.
Can we keep the non Crtt trip and the Crtt trip on different dates please? Ian's proposed mooch would uncover areas of Rhosydd that not many members have seen before and will be quite an interesting and relaxed trip if I'm honest.

excellent point joel, seeing as we are doing crtt on the 25 it would be a shame to miss out all the other stuff we usually leave out.

After not being able to do Yorkshire trip, I can do this one on the tenth, but after reading this entire topic Im no better off, do I need SRT kit or not.
You do not need SRT ;)
Is this the winding gear your on about:

Just an update, My mistake, I've been told that isn't the same winding gear that Tony and llion discovered a year or two back, as the one they found requires SRT and is the 5 to 9 Incline. May give Tony a ring and try and find out what the rigging is like to get to the other one (if there even is any). It may be worth me brining my SRT kit as it still seems that they are the only ones that have seen it.

Dear Customer Service
Please (and without anyone shouting at me) can someone tell me if there is a through trip on this date as well as the Non SRT trip please.
Yours faithfully
confused
No.
But there is a Through Trip on the 25th March.
Different Thread - i'll put a post in it to bump it up into the recent posts ;-)
I'm still coming, happy to show the way, but I may have to dart off up a rope with dylan, but he doesn't know that yet :P
I do now :woohoo:
So no Gremlins lurking in the dark then.....
Cafe for those who don't know is here:

what clothing is recomended for tomorrow ?
You don't need your caving suit but you can if you want. The mine is a slate mine with BIG passages and BIG chambers. You may get a little "scuffed" from the walls as you are bound to make contact.
I will be walking up to the mine entrance in wellies (it's a reasonable walk) as the water at the entrance will be about wellie depth - I am hoping it won't actually go over.
Make sure you have warm clothes for in the mine but you may "sweat like a trooper" walking up the hill to get to it.
Take lunch and a drink.
I recommend light gloves too (slate is sharp)
:)
Ian
Is anybody having breakfast in the cafe before? I'll be there by 9.30 so I can have a good scoff :)
Joel said he was getting there for 9:30am and I probably will too ;)
Can't beat a good greasy breakfast before that nice little walk
My sack weighs a ton as usual.
Srt kit and camera equipment weighing me down. I certainly won't be racing anyone up the hill...
where you buggeing off srt ing to
can I come?
where you buggeing off srt ing to

Its only a little rope to climb but worth it to see the winding gear.
I might take a drill and a few bolts in case speedy's peg is looking a bit worse for wear ;)

Mate, if you could bring bolting gear, then that would be great. happy to share the load. One of us still has to go up the thing though to bolt the top :(. We could just draw straws... :P As far as I know, the rope is only secured to an old peg. I hope it's not one of the Speedy special black 11mm military rope as my descender hates the stuff

Great video Ian
Awesome video :). Nice one Ian!
Cheers to everyone who came, another cracking UCET trip.
Looks great, how long did that trip take to get through ?
We didn't do the "through" trip, just a backwards wander to Croesor and then an explore of the stuff we miss when we come out the other way.4 hours approx - 6 including the walking and farting about :)
Thanks Ian, Joel and Dylan. It was a really good day.
Great video and photos too. :)
Thanks to everyone for such a wonderful day yesterday! Also excellent pictures. That open misty chamber was etheric!
An excellent film Ian. Very sorry about the demise of your car. I am sure we can have a whip around to help you get a decent banger.
Ian, whats up with the old rust bucket?
What you need is a decent car - £2000 buys you my old green landy ;-)
p.s. which is actually newer than my 'new' white landy!
