Title: Thurs 03/11/11
Post by: evan john on Nov 01, 2011, 07:39 AM
There is a potential trip down ODB in Minera but this is yet to be confirmed.

If the trip goes ahead then the numbers will be limited to six and you will need your green card to enter. The intention is to go to the dig which is tight in places

We need another trip in the event that this is cancelled or numbers are high so please express an interest here.

I'm coming with a newbie, and she would like to see a cave, but she hasn't got a green card (neither have i for that matter, as mike still has mine too  )

Can another trip be laid on please? I'd happy to lead a trip into poachers, for anyone who is interested.

I should home in time on thursday all being well. That said I was down to the dig in ODB not very long ago so if others are desperate for places (who perhaps haen't been before?) then i'd be happy enough to give up my place and do something else.

I can't find ODB Minera on the 'Knowledge base' so I don't know what it is like.  I have seen the You Tube film about Minera recorded October 2008, and it looks nice with a white glacier of minerals. But I'm not sure if this is the same hole. I'm not so keen on tight bits, but can manage an electron ladder to get in.

If I am coming from Bangor with Joel and Newbie, then I am happy to do Poachers again. I also need to meet up with Tim Watts so it would be great if he can lead us through Poachers.  Ladder needed?

What does ODB stand for?

ODB = Ogof Dydd Byraf.

It isn't in the knowledge bank John as the publication of photos is banned and no video has been made (or if it has it wasn't by any of us and we don't have any access to it).

There is an electron ladder in ODB down a squeezy bit - you would manage fine ;)

Evan
Can you put me down provisionally, I'll confirm early Weds am if its a goer.
What time are you meeting as I need to sort a babysitter.

Thanks for that Ian. So it is not the same as the film you did October 2008.
I'll wait till Joel confirms whether he and Newbie need a lift, and I will go wherever they decide.

If ODB requires cards and forbids photos then I assume this is a much more tightly controlled system - not like any of the others I have come to so far.

ODB trip - Meet at the Moors Inn Car Park at Bwlchgwyn at 18.30 and then someone will need to lead everyone down to the meet point at the Minera Quarry.

Marc will be there to meet you.  Remember to take your BCA cards or you might not get in!!!!

John,

Many caving clubs have sole access rights to caves and in many cases there are conditions attached which are either dictated by the landowner or arbitrarily imposed by the club(s).

The whole matter is contentious and political and there is very little consesus within the caving community as to the merits, the rights and the wrongs.

You are right that ODB is more tightly controlled than other caves you have so far visited but there are a great many more that are similarly controlled.

I'll be happy enough to bring a ladder and meet at Poachers (well meet at the carpark by cilcain bridge).

To be honest i'm going to be pretty goosed after this trip offshore, will be pretty much coming straight from the airport and have worked 22 16-18hours days on the run so a nice amble into poachers would be just what the doctor ordered as opposed to dragging my fat arse up out of North Henblas!

Is ODB a mine or a cave?
If I join Tim and others at Poachers this week, then will UCET be visiting ODB again in the next 12 - 18 months?

It is a cave and it is very probable the club will be invited to return in the next 12-18 months.

MarC is a member of both clubs and a little tap on his shoulder can usually make it happen :)

All being well there will be another trip to Poachers led by Tim Watts (subject to flights from the North Sea), with me, Joel, and Newbie. Anyone lese is welcome to come to the Cilcain Bridge car park at 7.00pm.  The later time is to alow leway for Tim's arrival.  I'm sure everyone knows that Poacher's involves just a slight squeeze into the entrance hole, then an electron ladder to a relatively flat floor.  Most of the passage was designed by nature for easy human access, but there are a few places where you have to bend over a bit.  There is also a little river to wade through. Lots of interesting formations to see - even a bit of a mine.

Are you coming to poachers scotty? I want to try and push the waterfall if the water flow is low enough. Last time, I lost my contact lenses, was good fun.

Thanks for the update on your progress Tim.  I hope it workouts for you if we meet at Cilcain car park at 19.00.

Re pub, I have never been to the Britannia, and I think it is near the A55 for an easy return for us to Bangor.  I am also aware of others suggesting we need to book (The Brit) for a Chrustmis do.  So it would be good to see what the place is like.  Colostemy is also great for real ale but not so good for me having to drive back afterwards!  Part of me wishes there was a pub like that just down the road from me - part of me is glad there isn't.

I have been asked to advise that Vikki will not be out tonight - apparently someone has crashed into her car (I assume she is ok as she made the call the Mike). That will be one less for ODB

Anyone want to own up to rolling up bits of mud and arranging them to resemble dog poo strategically on the path

Funny joke though, it did have me worried for a moment when i knelt in it. The sniff test proved them to be mud though.

RE ODB
Had a great trip, some fantastic formations. I did'nt go to the dig but went with some others down the 'sandy crawl' which was tight enough for me!!!
The initial ladder pitch is quite awkward.
Had a pint with Mark and Mike after and they said that they are happy to take trips whenever requested. Smashing couple of lads.

Thanks for telling us about the OBD trip. I'm sorry we could not come but logistics dictated otherwise, and as explained above we did also have a fantastic evening! I do look forward to OBD when I am more confident and also have a proper padded suit.  Pity there are no pictures on the web of the ODB caverns.  Can we invite Mike and Mark to join us on UCET Thursday trips?
