Title: Mendip weekend
Post by: Claire Brimson on Oct 03, 2011, 10:24 PM
12 - 13th November sat - sun

saturday - Cuthberts Cave.  Sporting trip, wet.  Leader led, 6 people only.  Can be hard going if folk want the full day trip.   Technicality - Hard, entrance = sporting, wet and can be awkard and tightish if your on the larger side.

sunday - am trying to get leader for Shatter and Fern Cave systems.  Both are leader led, 4 and 3 people only, trying for 2 trips into Fern.

If no leader for these, then thers lots of other stuff.

Will try and book Wessex.

Please note.

Although the above trips are leader led and specify numbers, there are numerous cave systems on the Mendips, feel free to come along and do Swildons Hole, through trip from Rods pot to Bath swallet, Goatchurch, Rhino Rift, Hunters Hole to practice SRT, GB Cave (nice) and if you want, I can try and get a trip down Upper Flood, tho you may be helping to carry dig buckets out!

Need to know numbers.

Accomodation booked at the Wessex for 7 people so we have the beds, now we just need the commitment.  Â£5 per night booked for Friday 11th Nove  and Saturday 12th Nove.

St Cuthberts is on.  The trip can be tailored as required, so either a full-on trip of about 7 hrs OR a 3 hr trip can be had.  Its up to those attending.  Again, it is a pretty cave and leader only, so is generally not really bashed about, good for pics if you want them.

Wessex cave hut is just down the road from the Hunters pub so real ale is often served up.  Les may join us pm for a pint or two - Les.....

Am waiting for Shatter and Fernhill - these are 2 easy and very beautiful cave systems, very short tho, they are leader trips only.

You dont have to do Cuthberts as said before, theres masses to do on the Mendips!  Easy or hard, SRT or nonSRT.  Join us if you dare!!!!!

I would love to join you, but unfortunately that weekend I will be roughing it for a week on board a luxury liveaboard in the Red Sea. It's a tough life but someone has to do it.

I am sure you will have fun, just not as much a me

I 'spect I could be persuaded to meet some people in the "Centre of the Universe" if it meant I had to drink beer...

Friday 11th November is Wells Carnival, an amazing sight if you've never seen it.

I'll second that - personally the more technical and more SRT the better :-) But obviously cater for the masses :-)

Post by: Les Williams on Oct 10, 2011, 07:36 PM
So let me get this straight, you want to come to Mendip to do some SRT? :silly:

We only have two SRT caves here (well 3 if you count Hunters Hole). The main reason to visit the Mendips is to go to The Centre of the Universe (Hunters Lodge Inn) and in your spare time between sessions you can get a cave or two in...

For the avoidance of doubt:
Yourkshire for SRT
Derbyshire for mud (and SRT)
Mendip for fine stream caves!

I have Cuthberts Leader booked and Shatter + Fernhill leader booked - both very short caves.  Hunters Inn will be drained of all its real ale due to us lot!!! By the way.... Sunday = Scotty the ferrets birthday :)

Cuthberts entrance pitch rift is tightish in the middle section and awkward - just to warn you guys..... there can somtimes be a slight spill of water over it as well (only if its been raining alot tho).

any cave supplies really just make sure it is a light one as the heavy gaugewill make you sweat your arse offfff. what's also handy is pockets in the knees for knee pads.

Not Longwood, not sure I fit through the Letterbox any more so it would be quite a short trip...

You only pay for the beds you use (unless we have to turn others away and you let us down). It is unlikely that all the beds will be used so it out not be an issue, but better to let us know if people drop out and less beds are needed. ;)

Steve - check the list on page 3, I put your names down from Mike L ;)

Scotty - ya daft monkey!  See you FRIDAY 5pmish :silly:

Mike and Tim - I think Im mad to enjoy being underground with you guys....

You are all welcome on my home cave turf - 3 generations of my family have explored the underground systems of the mendips!!!! And... speaking to my father's cousin at the weekend, it was him and his father and their caving friends who started the 'Medical Rescue Team' for the mendip cavers! (they were both doctors from Bristol university)  Amazing really :)

Dont forget your subs for staying over....
just out of interest.... why is Guy not gracing us with his presence this time???? He should be coz he would enjoy it all!
He is probably unaware of the trip .... the amount of time he spends on a computer readng emails/forums or anything similar is directly inproportionate to the relative distance an electron orbits a nucleus.

I am seeing him Monday evening ... I will try my best to remember to nudge him to look but my memory cells are also dispersed in a like manner and the probability of forgetfulness is akin to the likelihood that our sun will, one day, go nova.

He has family staying with him all this week and I also know he has changed his mobile phone. I can give you his home phone number but if you get anything other than an answer machine message you will have accomplished a feat greater than any other club member has managed and I will delighted to send a message to Norris McWhirter (through the spiritual aether as he is dead) for an entry into the Guinness book of records.

personally I'd rather do some caves with nice formations than thrutching around all day as I've never been to this area before and it looks like there are some very pretty caves.

funny that. enjoyed a few very nice pints of butt-cum recently. it was the butt of many a joke. 'a pint of your finest butt cum please mr barman', 'mmm, this but cum is going down a treat', 'nicest butt cum i've ever tasted' and on it went on! so entertaining it was I got these photos of my boss slurping down a nice pint of butt cum that i'd supplied him with.

Spits not required for most Mendip caves. We have 'P' bolts almost everywhere.
Bring mallions though.

Rhino Rift Right and route is on M8 spits but Rhino is sort of out of bounds at the moment.
http://cscc.org.uk/wiki/doku.php?id=news:start

Also note that Cavers use M8 spits whereas lots of mine explorers use M10. It can save a lot of unnecessary running around and changing of plans if you are aware of that point...

Title: Re: Mendip weekend
Post by: Ian A on Nov 12, 2011, 05:33 PM
I purchased half a Sten light when I broke mine to get me through the dark period (pardon the pun) whilst mine (pardon the pun again) was fixed. When I bought the "half" Sten light, the other half of it came with it too. I have since fixed mine so I do have two.

I have no intention of attaching it to Woman's lid as she no longer uses it and it would serve well as a backlight except for the following;

1) I have broken my regular SLR
2) The replacement SLR is useless because I bought a new one that has LESS time with the shutter open and doesn't work as well (I didn't read the spec first   )
3) I no longer have the said SLR - I gave it to woman
4) I have no replacement for the replacement

So, no camera to use the Sten with

First cave pictures are of Saint Cuthberts Cave system
Pictures with people in are
     1) Sarah - gaffa tape helmet
     2) Ali - the trooper
     3) Steve - Farmhouse cider
     4) Vicki - the cavefrog!
People pictures and following pictures are taken in Swildons Hole.  The guys abseiled the 40ft pitch which is sporting as it has a 8ft waterfall entering into the chamber you descend into.  To get to the pitch head requires a scramble up and accross a drop looking down into the streamway, you then scramble up using footledges and bridging methods all of which they learnt in Cuthberts.

Well done guys and thanks Scotty :)
