Mine Attributes
Manganese, then Slate
Description
The mine has a small tip outside the adit which belies the actual size underground. Outside there's evidence of slate trimming by hand in a makeshift waliau which takes advantage of a large boulder for part of the structure. Once inside, the rock changes from slightly ochre-ish to slatey as the first chamber is reached. Some roofing has been attempted and slabs lie on the ground ready to be taken out. There's an interesting plate of steel with some fine rust growths on it. From this chamber, two passageways go on. The right hand goes to a waterfall and an extensive attempt at a roofing shaft, fallen in. There are bar-rails along here with some super rust shell growths on them. Some cans and an explosives box have been placed on a shelf of rock along the way.
The other passageway goes to another small chamber with more roofing. It's a fine little mine with plenty to look at, esp if you like rust shells, and worth the detour off the road if you are coming up to the head of Cwm Teigl.
AJR in his slate gazetteer states that the mine was worked 1890's to 1914, then by Llew Twrog in the 1920's.
