Adder
I looked an adder in the eye, his scales were rather fine
he never blinked at all, when his eye looked into mine
his eyes were deep and red as fire, when he looked me in the eye
then he sniffed me with his wavy tongue, as a moment passed us by
he seemed content in the morning sun, for a moment more, or so
then he scurried off beneath a stone, as fast as he could go
