Title: Fondest Memories
Post by: Robin Jones on Oct 28, 2018, 10:30 PM
Yesterday I spent the day in one of my favourite mines in North Wales (Parc Mine).  As I wandered around the several miles of passages it has to offer, I couldn't help but to reminisce the trips gone by in there with people who have disappeared off the caving scene.

UCET have a few new faces at the moment, so I'm hoping people will get on board with this and I'm hoping that the sharing of our fondest memories might initiate some trips to the places that UCET hasn't visited for a while.

So here is the challenge....  Please paste below a photo, video, or memorable story from a caving trip gone by and don't forget to mention where it is (Please note: I've posted this in the public section of the forum so potential new members can see it too)

Where's this then, mind you, you won't see that wooden tub again, it has long since dissintegrated.

It won't let me include a picture of the wooden tub, why would that be.

So, back to the point of this thread … “fondest memories”

This is a piccie from the first Gold Mine trip I was on with UCET in 2006. There is (as always) a story behind every picture. This trip saw the first time John used someone else’s bag (without them knowing) to carry around his “belongings”. On this occasion, he had stuffed his lunch into Doug’s bag without telling him. Doug then, of course, unwittingly carried it around with him all day until we finally sat down for a (late) lunch. Having been in the mine already, we had come out in a long procession and, if memory serves, Doug was at the rear. By the time he had caught us up and by the time John had persuaded him that he has surreptitiously hidden his lunch his in bag (and got it out), the rest of us were ready to leave. Doug, having had little opportunity to lunch, was determined to make a cuppa from his flask, plonked himself down, and still being vexed from carrying John’s additional weight all day, announced (can’t remember his exact words) “I’m having my fucking lunch aren’t I” and made us all wait (you can see the feet of one of us (im)patiently waiting and the photo is taken from an elevated standing position.

From then, it became a regular occurrence that other people’s bags were filled with “stuff” for them to carry around unawares (usually rocks).

yes it is Connah's Quay dock where the mine water issues into the Dee we pulled out many tyres, Tesco trolleys and old bicycles from places like that along the river Dee.
